FAQ

Q: What are Cal, Alk & Mag powders used for?

A: These powders are used to maintain and adjust the three core reef parameters — calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. Together, they form the foundation of a stable reef system and are essential for coral growth, skeletal development, and overall tank health.

Q: Why should I use powders instead of liquid supplements?

A: Powders are more cost-effective, highly concentrated, and give you full control over how strong your dosing solutions are. They also take up less storage space and are ideal for long-term use.

Q: Can I use these powders with dosing pumps?

A: Yes. Once mixed into liquid solutions, they are perfectly suited for use with dosing pumps or manual dosing routines.

Q: Are these suitable for all reef tanks?

A: Absolutely. These powders are suitable for soft coral, LPS, mixed reef, and SPS-dominant systems. You can adjust dosing amounts to match your tank’s consumption.

Q: How do I mix the powders?

A: Each powder is designed to be dissolved in RO/DI water to create a dosing solution. Follow the recommended mixing instructions on the packaging to achieve the correct concentration.

Q: How often should I dose calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium?

A: This depends on your tank’s consumption. Most reef tanks require daily dosing, especially SPS systems. Regular testing will help you determine the exact dosing schedule.

Q: Will this help improve coral growth?

A: Yes. Maintaining stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is critical for coral skeletal growth, health, and colouration.

Q: Do these powders contain impurities or unwanted elements?

A: Coral Essentials powders are made from high-purity ingredients to minimise impurities and ensure safe, consistent dosing for reef aquariums.

Q: Can I mix all three into one solution?

A: No. Calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium should always be mixed and dosed separately to prevent chemical reactions and precipitation.

Q: Is this a complete dosing system?

A: These powders provide the core foundation elements. For optimal results, they can be used alongside trace and micro element supplements to fully support coral health.

Calcium Foundation Bundle

(Calcium Up Powder + Trace A 50ml + Trace B 50ml)

Build strong skeletal growth and unlock true coral potential with this calcium-focused bundle. Designed to support one of the most critical elements in reef keeping, this combination ensures your corals have everything they need to grow dense, healthy structures while maintaining vibrant colour.

Calcium Up Powder gives you control over calcium levels, while Trace A and Trace B replenish essential trace elements that are rapidly consumed in growing reef systems. Together, they create a balanced approach to growth and stability.

Alkalinity & Stability Bundle

(Carbonate Up Powder + Trace C 50ml + Boron 50ml + Bromide 50ml)

Stability is everything in a reef tank — and this bundle is built to deliver exactly that. Focused on alkalinity and buffering capacity, it helps maintain consistent pH levels while supporting coral health and biological processes.

Carbonate Up Powder allows alkalinity control, while Trace C, Boron, and Bromide work together to enhance buffering stability, support coral metabolism, and improve overall system balance.

Magnesium Balance Bundle

(Magnesium Up Powder + Potassium 50ml)

Magnesium plays a critical role in maintaining the balance between calcium and alkalinity.

Magnesium Up Powder helps prevent unwanted precipitation and keeps your core parameters stable, while Potassium enhances coral colouration and supports overall vitality.

Powdered Additives

Maximum efficiency and precision in your dosing regimen

Powdered range supplements are now available! The Coral Essentials range has just expanded with their powdered supplements for the advanced user. These powders offer the highest yield based on price per litre and at the same time offering maximum precision in your daily dosing.

Simply manually add your traces A, B and C, Boron, Bromide and Potassium to give you corals everything they need for strong and colourful growth.

Calcium Up

Coral Essentials, Calcium Up is a concentrated source of high grade powdered calcium. Calcium is an essential component in the formation of calcium carbonate skeletons, i.e. coral growth. The calcium levels in marine tanks need to be checked regularly to determine the take up in your system. How much calcium is being used can be calculated by testing at regular intervals to see how much the calcium level drops during the set interval. Then it is simple to calculate dosing requirements to suit the depletion rate. After you have determined this, a regular check of the calcium levels should be made. Your tank will change over time as coral grows, new pieces are added as well as invertebrates that also take up calcium. We have found ideal calcium levels to be at about 430-470ppm for most aquariums. Levels of 470+ ppm are desirable if you want to maintain high levels of growth in a SPS and hard coral dominant system.

Simply follow the directions on the bucket and then add your your traces A and B to this calcium mixture.

Carbonate Up

Coral Essentials Carbonate Up is a concentrated powdered solution of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. Carbonate is also an essential component in the formation of calcium carbonate skeletons, i.e. coral growth. The alkalinity levels in marine tanks need to be checked regularly to determine the carbonate take up in your system. How much carbonate is being used can be calculated by testing at regular intervals to see how much the KH level drops during the set interval. Then it is simple to calculate dosing requirements to suit the depletion rate. After you have determined this, a regular check of the KH levels should be made. Your tank will change over time as coral grows, new pieces are added as well as invertebrates that also take up carbonate. We have found ideal KH levels to be at about 8-9 dKH for most aquariums. Levels of 8.5 – 9.0 dKH are desirable if you want to maintain high levels of growth in a SPS and hard coral dominant system.

Simply follow the directions on the bucket and then add your traces C, bromide and boron to this carbonate mixture.

Magnesium Up

Coral Essentials Magnesium Up is a concentrated powdered source of two different  magnesium powders. Coral take up magnesium into their calcium carbonate skeletons. It is important to maintain adequate magnesium levels as this is essential in maintaining correct calcium and alkalinity levels. Poor magnesium levels usually result in the need for addition of much higher levels of calcium and carbonate than would normally be required. It serves to prevent the excessive precipitation of calcium carbonate from aquarium water. The magnesium levels in marine tanks need to be checked regularly to determine the take up in your system. Magnesium usage can be calculated by testing at regular intervals to see how much the level drops.  Then it is simple to calculate dosing requirements to suit the depletion rate. After you have determined this, a regular check of the magnesium levels should be made. Your tank will change over time as coral grows, new pieces are added as well as most other aquarium inhabitants also take up magnesium. We have found ideal magnesium levels to be at about 1350-1400ppm for most aquariums.

Simply follow the directions on the bucket and then add your your potassium to this magnesium mixture.
